A Quick History - Jaguar

Jaguar Logo

In 1922, William Lyons and William Walmsley began the Swallow Sidecar Company, also known as SS Cars LTD. They originally made motorcycle sidecars and only moved to vehicles later on. The Jaguar name first appeared in 1935 on a sport model.

1935 SS90
The end of World War II required the company to change it's name to Jaguar, due to the bad connotations of the SS abbreviation. The cars went on to win several races in the 1950s.

In 1966, the British Motor Corporation purchased Jaguar, but the company was able to move away in 1984 as a separate company. Price and quality of their vehicles increased greatly throughout this period and they were again purchased in 1989, by Ford. Ford greatly expanded Jaguar's inventory and range of vehicles.

However, in 2008, Ford announced plans to sell Jaguar along with Land Rover to Tata Motors of India, who currently own both companies.

A Quick History - Land Rover

Land Rover is a British company known for their four wheel drive vehicles. It is the 2nd oldest 4WD brand in the world behind Jeep.

Land Rover Logo

The brand was actually started in 1948 with one specific model known as the Land Rover, from the Rover Company. Originally inspired by the American Jeep, a large range was developed over the next years, and the Land Rover Company was finally founded in 1978.

Land Rover Series I
The Rover Group was owned by BMW in 1994 and six years later, the company was broken up. Land Rover was sold to Ford. In 2008, as part of their response to the economic crisis, Ford sold Land Rover along with Jaguar to Tata Motors.

Finding your Dream Car with Tailpipe

Something Eddie Mercer Automotive doesn't deal with often is antique vehicles. Occasionally, we may have one. For example, right now we have a 1986 Mercedes-Benz on the lot. We also have a 1958 Buick Special that we used to feature out front every day. I've seen two 70's cars leave the lot. But, it isn't really something we specialize in.

A major way to search for your dream car, or first car, or just a project car is to go around to different sites, most popular is Craigslist. But what if you wanted something like a Porsche or Ferrari? Ebay's there for that and so are SEVERAL car auction websites. There's also James Edition, which we covered in an earlier blog. And these are all great! They're all amazing ways to find your car. But you have to go to each website which can take a while.

That's where Tailpipe comes in. It is a search engine of all the auction and car websites. Tailpipe's tagline is even "One Search. All Classics". Search engines like this one exist elsewhere of course, but they don't look as GOOD as Tailpipe looks! They list the popular cars on the main website: Mustangs, Corvettes, Camaros, Firebirds, Beetles, and Austin Healeys but you can find just about anything on there!

Tailpipe
Tailpipe - One Search. All Classics

One car we found was a 1973 Ferrari 246GT. It's going for $510,000! There are several other Ferrari's that are in Auctions as well. Each photo on Tailpipe directs you to the website where you can buy or bid on the car.

Another one was a 1931 Rolls-Royce Phantom I, going for a more affordable $135,000.

And of course, we have to include an American Muscle Car! This one is a 1969 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Convertible asking for $180,000.

Tailpipe is pretty easy to use. Their website is straight forward and the search is simple. Plus, it's a VERY easy, and enjoyable, to waste your day away while you pine for your dream car.

A Quick History - Toyota

Toyota is currently the third largest car manufacturer in the world behind General Motors and Volkswagen. Based in Japan, Toyota started off as a division of Toyoda Automatic Loom Works by the founder's son, Kichiro Toyoda. The Japanese Government was urging the company to produce automobiles as the country needed cars due to their war in China.

Toyota Logo

Toyoda began researching vehicles in 1929 by traveling to Europe and the United States to view production of vehicles. Their first engine debuted in 1934, the first car in May 1935, and the first truck in August 1935. They tended to resemble Dodges and Chevrolet at first.

1935 Toyota Model G1

Toyota was established as a separate company in 1937. Even though their name is Toyoda, the name was changed to Toyota because eight it considered a lucky number in Japan and in katakana, it takes eight strokes to write Toyota.

During the Second World War, the car company made trucks for the Japanese Army. Toyota's factories were lucky though; the war ended just before a bombing run was planned on those plants. However, the end of the war proved trouble for the fledgling company. The economy in Japan was horrid and even though they introduced a new car, Toyota was on the edge of bankruptcy by 1949. They did manage to get loans as long as they made a separate sales division, laid off workers, and lowered wages.

The response to this plan resulted in a two month strike. In order to appease the union and allow the layoffs and wage cuts to take place, the President resigned. The Korean War ended up saving the company though. The United States military ordered five thousand trucks from Toyota.

Toyota expanded in the 1960s with new research and development factories. In 2008, Toyota suffered just like American car companies. In response, they lowered production of the Tundra, which had experience low sales, and increased production of fuel efficient in demand cars such as the Prius, Corolla, and Yaris.
