Buying a Car on Craigslist

While we'd love if you bought your car from us, we know some people prefer to buy on a car they found on Craigslist. We wanted to give you a few safety tips on buying a vehicle from the By Owner section.

Craigslist is a great, local tool that is easy to use. There are tons of choices to use to narrow down what you're looking for and its updated constantly with new vehicles. Craigslist has anything from a 2014 Porsche Cayman

2014 Porsche Cayman

to this

But how do you buy one without getting scammed?

Craigslist offers a few tips right up front.

  •  Don't buy from someone offering to ship the vehicle. You'll send them your money and most likely never see them, your car, or your money ever again.
  • Don't wire your money! This includes Western Union. You have no idea where that money is going.
  • Don't buy without seeing the vehicle in person. This should be a strict rule to follow! You can't be positive that the seller didn't just take photos from the attractive side. Perhaps the left side is in PERFECT condition, but the right is missing it's door mirror and has no paint. Take it a step further if you'd like, ask the seller if it's possible to have it checked out by a mechanic. Check it for flood damage.

The most important aspect about buying a Craigslist vehicle, or anything on Craigslist, is BE CAREFUL! Bring a friend if you don't feel comfortable. Try to meet at a public, well traveled spot if possible. Make sure to discuss all the details of the transaction before hand.

Craigslist is an amazing tool and you can find a lot of great things on there! Just like the gems for sale below. But at the same time, you don't want to get stuck with a 2010 Avocado, so always, always check out the car before you buy!

A Quick History: Mazda

Mazda got it's start in Japan as the Toyo Cork Kogyo company in 1920 by Jujiro Matsuda and actually made machine tools, not vehicles. The name, Mazda, is said to have derived from both the founder's name and the name for a god in early West Asian civilizations known as Ahura Mazda, the symbol for wisdom, intelligence, and harmony. The name was changed to Toyo Kogyo in 1927.

Toyo Kogyo switched to vehicles in 1931 with the introduction of the Mazda-Go. Throughout World War II, they produced weaponry (mostly rifles) for the Japanese military.

Even though ever car made by Toyo Kogyo was named a Mazda, the company wasn't actually called “Mazda” until 1984. The first vehicles in North America were seen in Canada in 1959. In 1970, they came to the United States where they were very successful.

The oil crisis crippled several automotive companies throughout the world and Mazda was saved simply by the intervention of a bank. Their sales had taken a large hit as customers wanted fuel efficient cars and rotary powered models just weren't it. Luckily, the company did have piston engine based vehicles and the Familia and Capella became very important to Mazda's survival.

Between 1979 and 2010, Mazda partnered with Ford. They helped design the 1991 Ford Explorer and had their own 2 door edition named the Mazda Navajo. Although the Ford Explorer went on to become the top selling sport utility vehicle in the US for over ten years, the Navajo suffered and failed.

Ford gave up much of it's stake in Mazda in 2008, due to Ford's financial problems at the time. They still own 3% and the two companies are known to remain strategic partners.

Meet our Salesmen: Paul Smith

Paul started with us back in late 2013. He's very straight forward; I knew going into the questions that some of his answers would be very short and sweet. I had to prod him a bit to get a little more out of him at some points. Paul really gets along with everyone and never gets down. His biggest dream is to own land and be rich. Our mechanic, Gary, came up with a great nickname for him: Lincoln. It fits him perfectly.

Why are you a car salesman?
Money.

...And?
Money. *Nods*

What's your favorite thing about working at Eddie Mercer Automotive?
Money.... But I really do like it here. I get along with everyone and you'd have to drag me out of here if you ever wanted me to leave.

And your least favorite part?
Working with Jeremy. That guy... Don't even get me started.

What's your favorite car you've sold?
Land Rover LR3.

Why?
The customer was amazing and it was just a fun deal.

Have you ever had a disaster on the job? Here or anywhere else?
Actually, no.
(Jeremy: That means it's coming.)

What is your favorite pastime?
Guns and video games, definitely.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
Rich. Can I say rich? Yeah, rich.

Dodge Dart Pensacola
Paul selling the Dodge Dart

Favorite car you've owned?
1996 Gold Ford Taurus, my first car. Definitely my Taurus. Though I love Toyota now.

Why should people contact you?
I like meeting clients and making connections. We can help each other out and I want to make a deal that you'll remember so you'll send your friends my way.

What's with the pathetic plant on your desk?
It was given to me on my first week by a salesman that used to work here, Sean. I feel obligated to take care of it now.

A Quick History - Volkswagen and the Beetle

For four decades, the Ford Model T (1908-1927) held the record for world car production. Between 1972 and 1973, the Volkswagen Beetle broke it.

Volkswagen Logo
Volkswagen Logo
Volkswagen is currently the top German automobile manufacturer and second in the world behind General Motors. The company was originally founded by the German Labour Front, a Nazi trade union. At the time it was introduced, Germany's car market was almost entirely luxury vehicles and only motorcycles were cheap enough for the public to afford. One out of 50 Germans owned a car. A car for the people was demanded.

However, Volkswagen couldn't make it for the low cost Hitler was calling for, so Hitler developed a savings plan. A customer would put in 5 marks a week and the government would give them a car when they saved enough. 336,000 people took part in this program and all of them lost their savings in 1945 when Berlin was seized by Russia.

The Beetle was developed for this program but only a few were made before 1939, at the start of World War II. None could be delivered to the customers partaking in the savings plan. During the war, they switched to military vehicles and were mostly commonly known for the Bucket Car utility vehicle. Common to many German companies during the war, Volkswagen did employ slave labor, taken from the concentration camps.

WWII World War II Kubelwagen

The factory was completely bombed in 1945 and captured by American forces. They handed it to the British and they placed British Army officer Major Ivan Hirst, REME in charge. Hirst would be credited with saving the company from destruction. He first used the factories for military vehicle maintenance. Soon after though, he pained one of the cars green and showed his Army superiors. They were in need of small cars and placed an order for 20,000. They were given to personnel and the German Post Office. When Britain left Germany, some of them took their Beetles.

In 1946, Hirst's Volkswagen was producing a thousand cars a month. It's funny because the factory was still damaged and they actually had to trade some of their new cars for steel to continue production. Hirst went on to offer the factory to several car companies around the world, but they laughed in his face at the Beetles' design. They claimed it would fail, it wasn't worth a damn, and he was a fool. Volkswagen would go on to become a large part of Germany's economic recovery. Hirst would leave the company in 1949 as the West Germany government took control.

Volkswagens were first sold in the United States in 1949 but only two units were sold. In 1955, it rose sharply to one million Beetles sold. Although it is constantly called a Beetle or a Bug, it was never actually called that officially by the company. It had always really been called “Type 1”. In 1973, 16 million beetles were produced and Volkswagen could claim the world production record for most produced single car make in history. During this time, the company expanded and bought the Audi company.

However, Volkswagen ran into trouble in 1973 when Beetle sales declined. This was when their purchase of Audi really came in handy, as that company's technology saved Volkswagen. In the next few years, their designs became very similar to other European vehicles.

Volkswagen continues to grow, expand, and buy new companies and introduce new models. In 2012, the Passat NMW won the 2012 Motor Trend Car of the Year.
