Chrysler is a division of the larger
company known as Chrysler Group LLC. The Chrysler brand was started
as a brand to compete with luxury vehicles such as Cadillac and
Lincoln.

Chrysler Group was founded by Walter Chrysler in 1925. In 1928, the company decided to divide its vehicles by price, class, and function. Plymouth became the low priced end and DeSoto in the middle. Dodge was also purchased that year and throughout the 30s, traded places with the DeSoto often.
1935 Chrysler Desoto Sedan |
Chrysler Group killed off the DeSoto
line in 1961 when Chrysler cars began to drift towards the middle of
the buyer spectrum. They aquired Jeep in 1987.
1975 Chrysler Newport |
Plymouth was discontinued in 2001. The
company decided to then market the Chrysler vehicle as everything
from economy cars to sports cars to traditional models.
