Volvo was created in 1927 by the Swedish ball bearing company, SFK. The name is Latin for “I roll”.
The first car was produced that year and the company continued to grow and open new plants around the world.

Later, in 2008, Ford was experiencing tough times from the economic crisis. At first, even though Volvo was causing losses, they wanted to try to keep the company and restructure it. However, later that year, it became apparent that they would have to sell Volvo.

Sweden at the time was very concerned about Volvo's future. With mounting layoffs, they wondered what would happen to their country's company if Ford declared bankruptcy. When Ford put it on the market, Sweden actually considered buying it for state ownership. There were many interested (rumored) buyers, but Geely Holding Group of China became the new owners of Volvo.
